Biography

Born in 1872 in Middlesbrough, he joined the 3rd (Militia) Battalion DLI in 1892 as a Second Lieutenant and moved, as a Regular officer, to the 1st Battalion DLI in 1894. He served throughout the Boer War with 1 DLI and the 23rd Mounted Infantry, and was Mentioned in Despatches in 1901. He retired from the Regular Army in 1910 and rejoined the Militia. He commanded the 3rd Battalion DLI, as Lieutenant Colonel, during the Great War. He died in 1967. The letters of George Cochrane written from South Africa, 1899-1902 have survived and are kept at Durham County Record Office, where the DLI's archive is now held.
