Biography

Born in Bedford, he was a labourer before he enlisted in the 68 Light Infantry in 1844, aged 21. He served for nearly 21 years, including 13 years overseas, and was never tried by court martial or named in the Defaulter's Book. He fought in the Crimea as a Colour Sergeant and as Quarter Master Sergeant in New Zealand. In 1865, whilst in New Zealand, he was discharged medically unfit (varicose veins) and retired to Melbourne, Australia.
