Biography

Born in Northumberland in 1895, he joined the DLI in 1914. He was awarded the Military Cross with 2 DLI on 9 August 1915 at Hooge, as a Second Lieutenant, when "at a critical moment under very heavy fire, he left his trench, rallied some men who were retiring owing to a misunderstanding, and led them back. He was several times buried by debris from large shells, but remained perfectly cool, and set a very fine example to those about him". After the war he became a race horse owner and trainer. He died in 1974.
