Cornelius Barella

Born in February 1889 in Sunderland, he served as a Sergeant with the 14th (Service) Battalion DLI during the Great War and was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery during the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. He was seriously wounded in the head during the War. In his civilian life, Cornelius Barella, whose grandfather had emigrated from Italy to Scotland, worked in the Sunderland shipyards. He married his wife, Isaballa, in Sunderland in 1908 and had three sons and three daughters. Cornelius Barella died in 1943 and was buried at Bishopwearmouth.
