John Arthur Gordon Arnot

Born in July 1927, he was educated at Dame Allen's School, Newcastle upon Tyne. After serving in the ranks for just over a year, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1946, joined the 2nd Battalion DLI and fought in Burma against the Dacoits (bandits). He then transferred to the 1st Battalion DLI and fought in the Korean War.
He later served in Egypt and in 1957 became Adjutant of the 6th Battalion DLI at Bishop Auckland, where he remained until 1960, when he was posted to the Nigerian Regiment and served with the United Nations in the Congo. He finally rejoined 1 DLI in Hong Kong in 1964.
In February 1966, he was awarded the Military Cross - the last to be awarded to the DLI - for his bravery and leadership in operations in Borneo (see citation).
In 1979, Lieutenant Colonel Arnot became Regimental Secretary in Durham and played a leading role in the creation of the Museum's medal room.
John Arnot died in January 1988.
