Frederick Gardner

Born in Stratford upon Avon, he was a labourer before he enlisted as a Regular soldier in the 1st Battalion DLI. He fought in the Boer War but left the Army in 1907. Recalled "to the Colours" in 1914, he joined the 2nd Battalion DLI at Litchfield and fought on the Western Front until he was killed in action, aged 42, on 21 March 1918, during the German offensive.
Frederick Gardner has no known grave, but his name is on the Memorial to the Missing at Arras. This Memorial records the names of 36,000 British soldiers missing in the battles around Arras.
