He served with the 8th (Territorial) Battalion DLI during the Great War and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1916, as a Company Sergeant Major, when "he showed great courage and determination in assisting to lead his company in a bombing attack under intense fire. He repeatedly went back for fresh supplies of bombs". In May 1918, he was commissioned as a Temporary Second Lieutenant and served with a Service Battalion of the DLI. George Tucker also gained the Italian Medal for Valour during the Great War.
