Biography

Born on 28 November 1893 in Sunderland, he joined the 7th Battalion DLI - Sunderland's local Territorial unit - in October 1910. In April 1915, he went with 7 DLI to the Western Front. He was promoted to Corporal in March 1916 and later to Sergeant. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in 1918 and was also twice Mentioned in Despatches. He was demobilised in September 1918 but re-enlisted with the 7th Battalion DLI in June 1920. He was finally discharged from the Army in June 1921.

Like his grandfather (30 years service) and father (49 years service) before him, George Thompson worked all his life at Vaux Brewery in Sunderland, finally retiring in 1959 as foreman of the fermenting room.
