Biography

Born in 1890 in Carlisle, he was teaching at Peases West School at Crook in 1914. He enlisted, as a Private, in 18 (Pals) DLI and served in Egypt and on the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery during the battle of the Somme in 1916, when he was wounded. After his recovery, he was recommended for a commission and, in 1917, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment and posted to the 13 Battalion. On 23 November 1917, during the battle of Cambrai, he was shot by a sniper. Thomas Stanfield was 26 years old, when he was killed. He is buried in the British Cemetery at Anneux, France.
