Born in Durham Charles Ryan was warded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (London Gazette 3.9.1818) as 277139 Private 1/7th Battalion DLI "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his platoon was held up by two machine guns. He rushed forward under very heavy fire and bayonetted the gun crews killing seven. The act was a splendid one and saved many lives during the subsequent advance." He lived in Shotton Colliery, where he was a miner. He died in 1969 or 1970.
