Born in Gateshead in 1892, he worked as a colliery blacksmith before he joined 13 DLI in 1914. In July 1916 in the trenches near Pozieres, Battle of the Somme, he was "B" Company's orderly and, over 5 days, "carried messages to Battalion HQ under heavy shell fire, when all telephonic communication had been "cut". He was awarded the Military Medal.
William Maughan died at Haswell in 1982, aged 90.
