F Davies served as a Private in the Great War and was awarded his DCM for action on 3 June 1918 when: "Under exceptionally difficult circumstances, when the communications and surrounding area were under heavy fire of gas shells, he displayed great courage and devotion to duty as runner. His example greatly encouraged the other brigade and battalion runners who were working with him."
