Biography

Born in 1886, he enlisted as a Regular soldier in The Durham Light Infantry in 1905. By 1914 he was a Permanent Staff Sergeant with the 9th (Territorial Force) Battalion DLI and won the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 26 April 1915 near Ypres, when during an attack under very heavy shell and rifle fire he took command of his Company and "by his bravery and personal example led them forward". Commissioned in 1916 for "services in the field", he rose to be acting Commanding Officer of the 15th (Service) Battalion DLI. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1917 and the French Croix de Guerre for his bravery and leadership during the German spring offensive of 1918 - both with 15 DLI. Frederick Bousfield retired as a Major in 1920 and died in London in 1936.
