He joined 13 DLI and served throughout the Great War. He was awarded the Royal Human Society Bronze Medal for saving from drowning Private Jameson, who had fallen into the swollen River Lys on the night of 28 September 1915. In June 1916, as a sergeant, he was awarded the Military Medal for leading a bombing raid on German trenches at Souchez, France, in which several dug-outs were destroyed and many Germans killed.
