Born in 1890, John Hasted was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the DLI in 1910. During the First World War, he served with the 1st Battalion DLI in India and with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment in Mesopotamia (Iraq) in 1917, where he gained the Distinguished Service Order. He also served in the 3rd Afghan War in 1919. Before he retired in 1938, he was in command of the 2nd Battalion DLI. In September 1939, as the Second World War began, Lieutenant Colonel Hasted was given command of the newly formed Infantry Training Centre at Brancepeth Castle, which became the new home of the DLI. John Hasted died at Brancepeth in 1942.
