Biography

Robert Chatt was born in 1892. He joined The Durham Light Infantry as a boy bugler in 1906, and went with the 2nd Battalion to France in 1914; by 1916 he had attained the rank of Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer 2nd Class). On 12 March 1916 he was promoted from the ranks and commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant for Services in the Field. He was wounded on 26 September 1916. In 1917 he was seconded to the American Army, and on 16 March 1919 was Mentioned in Dispatches, whilst serving with a Trench Mortar Battery. He left the Regiment in 1925 to join the Durham Police Force, serving 30 years before retiring as a Sergeant. He died on 12 November 1975 at Bishop Middleham.
