Born in July 1918 in Eastriggs, Dumfries & Galloway, John Ritchie Hannah was a carpenter before he joined the Army in 1939. He served with the 8th Battalion DLI during the Second World War in Africa, Italy, Sicily, France and Germany. As a Company Sergeant Major in Sicily he gained the Military Medal for his bravery during a battle around the Simeto River in 1943 (see his Citation). After leaving the Army, he worked as a civil engineer. John Hannah died in February 2004.
