George William Green

Biography

Born in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, he briefly served in the 4th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment before joining the DLI as a Regular soldier in February 1914 aged 17 years. 11683 Private Green fought in the Great War on the Western Front from August 1915 and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal (now lost). After the war, he re-enlisted in the 7th Battalion DLI - a Territorial battalion with HQ in Sunderland - before he was discharged in March 1921. However he seems to have rejoined the Territorials and was transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1936.

According to his Army Book 358 entry (made 1921), George Green married in 1916, Hannah Frankish, and his home was at 11 Havelock Street, South Shields.
