Born in 1919 in Fencehouses, near Chester le Street, County Durham, he was working as a local government clerk when he was called-up in July 1939. Initially posted to the Royal Army Pay Corps, he was transferred in October 1940 to an unknown battalion of the DLI and served overseas. He had risen to the rank of Colour Sergeant before he was demobilized in February 1946.
