Born in October 1930, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion DLI in 1951 and first saw action in Korea. He also served in Berlin, Egypt and at home before he was employed in 1956 with the Royal Malay Regiment. In 1959 he became Adjutant of the 8th (Territorials) Battalion DLI in Durham, before rejoining 1 DLI in 1961 and serving in Berlin and Hong Kong. In 1966, Major McBain commanded "C" Company at the fortified base at Nibong in Borneo - the last campaign fought by the Regiment. He retired as a Colonel in 1978, having been the first commanding officer of the 7th Battalion The Light Infantry, and was appointed ADC (Territorial Army) to the Queen. Michael McBain died in 1997.
