From Bridlington, he served with the 1st Battalion DLI during the Second World War. He was awarded the Military Medal with "A" Company in October 1944 during an attack on Mont Spaccato, near Cesena in Italy when he set rescued four men under fire and set "a magnificent example to his men".
On 25 November 1944, during the crossing of the River Montone, he lost both his feet when he stepped on a German mine. He died in hospital four days later. He was 29 years old. Ernest Pluck is buried in Cesena War Cemetery.
