Biography

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1906, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion DLI in 1932 and fought with 9 DLI in 1940, in the Middle East and in Sicily. As Second in Command, Major Robinson was killed in action on 23 July 1943 in Sicily near Primosole Bridge along with the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Clarke, by a bomb from a German Nebelwerfer launcher.

"Big Bill" Robinson, a schoolteacher in Wallsend before the war, was 37 years old. He is buried in Catania Cemetery in Sicily.
