From Enfield, he served with the 8th Battalion DLI during the Second World War. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery whilst serving as a Platoon Sergeant with "D" Company at Primosole Bridge in Sicily in July 1943. He had first taken part in the night attack across the river and then during the day had used a Bren gun and later a 2" mortar to great effect. He was "an inspiration to all ranks". Charles Mackmin died in June 1988.
