From Rowlands Gill, he served with the 2nd Battalion DLI during the Second World War. He was killed in action on 29 April 1944 at Kohima in Northern India - the day his battalion was finally relieved on Garrison Hill after eight days of continuous fighting during which the Durhams lost over 100 men killed in action or died of wounds. Norman Johnson was 31 years old. He is buried in Imphal War Cemetery in India.
