Born in Witton le Wear, County Durham, in 1918, Henry Walton was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 6th (Territorial) Battalion DLI in 1938. On 10 July 1943, 6 DLI landed on the beaches of southern Sicily near Avola as part of the Allied invasion force. Captain Walton, commanding "C" Company, was killed as he left the landing craft. He was 25 years old. Henry Walton is buried in Syracuse War Cemetery in Sicily. His father, Colonel Frederick Walton, had served in 6 DLI during the Great War and commanded the battalion in 1918. His medals are also on display in the Museum.
