Biography

Born in 1894 in Canterbury, he served in the Kent Cyclists Battalion before he was commissioned in the 5th (Territorial Force) Battalion DLI in 1915. He served on the Western Front from 1916, was wounded three times and was awarded the Military Cross in September 1918, when he "led his company in a counter-attack, delaying the enemy sufficiently to allow the front-line to withdraw unmolested" (see citation). After the war, he took Holy Orders and served as an Army Chaplain in Africa and China, as well as at home. Robert Stockdale died in 1966, aged 72.
