Born in Scotland, he as working as an anchor maker in the Sunderland shipyards when he joined the DLI, probably the 7th (Territorial) Battalion DLI. Mentioned in Despatches in May 1917, he was made a Prisoner of War in 1918. During the Second World War, John Aitchison served as a Special Constable.
