Joseph Bell & George Robert Bell
These two brothers from Sheriff Hill, Gateshead joined 9 DLI - a Territorial battalion - before the First World War. Both first saw action at Ypres in April 1915. Joseph was killed during the failed attack on the Butte de Warlencourt, Battle of the Somme, on 6 November 1916. He was awarded a posthumous Military Medal for his bravery during this battle. A third brother, Thomas, was also killed in action with the Royal Fusiliers. George alone survived the Great War.
