From Leicestershire, he enlisted as a Private in the 2nd/6th Battalion DLI in January 1917 and served until his discharge in 1919, as a Lance Corporal. 2/6 DLI was made up of soldiers not considered fit enough for active service but in May 1918 this battalion was ordered to France because of the shortage of front line soldiers. 2/6 then took part in the advance of the British Army in September and October 1918. George Thorpe died in 1995.
