From Newcastle upon Tyne, he was commissioned in the 6th Battalion DLI in 1940. In command of the Battalion's Carriers in North Africa, he was awarded the Military Cross at Gazala in May 1942. During an attack, he was severely wounded and his driver killed. Unable to move the body, he held the driver's leg down on the accelerator and steered the Carrier to safety. He was also awarded the Bar to his MC before ending the war as a Staff Major.
