From Gateshead, he served with the 9th Battalion DLI - a Territorial battalion with its Headquarters in Gateshead - during the Great War and rose to be Lance Corporal. In July 1921, he was working as a labourer when he re-enlisted, aged 28, in the newly-reformed 9 DLI. Hugh Clark continued to served with the Territorials until he was finally discharged in August 1939 "having reached the age limit". He then joined the 13th Battalion Durham Home Guard.
According to his Army Book 358 entry, Hugh Clark, who was awarded his Territorial Efficiency Medal in 1923, married Mary McConville in Gateshead on 8 April 1912. They had two children, Elizabeth (born 25.11.1913) and Peter (born 21.10.1918, died 14.1.1922) and lived at 7 Burdon Street, Gateshead.
