Born in Sunderland, he enlisted in 11 DLI at the outbreak of the Great War. Following the surprise tank attack at Cambrai in November 1917, the German Army counter-attacked on 30 November at Gouzeaucourt. In order to allow 11 DLI to withdraw to a new line, Acting Regimental Sergeant Major McEvoy was ordered with 20 men, to cover the retreat. This he did, though at great cost. Patrick McEvoy, aged 28 years, died in hospital of a bullet wound in the chest on 20th April 1918. He was awarded a posthumous Military Cross.
