Douglas Eric Robinson

Born in Darlington, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 5th (Territorial) Battalion DLI. On 15 September 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, he was reported as missing presumed killed in action, after 5 DLI had attacked the trenches south of Martinpuich. In 1932, his remains were found on the battlefield and he was identified by his inscribed silver cigarette case - a gift from the bank in Darlington where he had worked. He was then buried in Serre Road No2 Cemetery on the Somme battlefield. Douglas Robinson was 22 years old when he was killed. His cigarette case, as well as his two campaign medals, are on display in the Museum.
