Born in Sacriston in 1890, he was a miner when he enlisted in the 15th (Service) Battalion DLI, on 25 November 1914 in Newcastle upon Tyne. James Hunter, who was married, was wounded in the trenches near Armetieres and died of his wounds in hospital on 3 November 1915, aged 28. James, one of 15 DLI's first casualties, is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen.
