Alfred Turner

Born in Low Fell in 1895, Alfred Turner enlisted in the 17th Battalion DLI at Gateshead in December 1914 but was transferred to the 11th (Service) Battalion DLI for active service on the Western Front. 11 DLI was a Pioneer unit attached to the 20th Division - digging trenches, repairing roads but fighting as infantry when required. Alfred Turner died of wounds on 2 October 1915 probably in a Casualty Clearing Station near where he is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery near Armentieres in France. He was 20 years old.
