Biography

Born in Castle Eden, he was living at Coundon Grange near Bishop Auckland, when he enlisted in the 15th Battalion DLI in 1914. 15 DLI was one of only two DLI battalions in action on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Private Peacock was killed in action on 16 September 1916 in a failed attack north of Flers. 15 DLI suffered over 400 men in this action. John Peacock has no known grave but his name is recorded on the Thiepval Memorial in France.
