"Your Commanding Officer and Brigade Commander have informed me that you distinguished yourself on 19th October 1917 during a hostile raid. You showed great gallantry and devotion to duty in getting in touch with the front line and returning through an exceptionally heavy barrage with a report. It is certainly due to your courage and devotion that valuable information was obtained at a critical time. I have read their report with much pleasure.
