Citation

Awarded Military Cross (London Gazette 26 September 1916) as Temporary 2nd Lieutenant, serving with 'B' Company 13th (Service) Battalion DLI on 4 August 1916 at Munster Alley, Battle of the Somme.

"For conspicuous gallantry during operations. He led two bomb attacks, capturing the enemy's forward block and taking five prisoners. A further block, defended by barbed wire and two machine guns, resisted all his efforts to capture it, but he established a block only eighteen yards away from it, and held on all night in spite of desperate efforts by the enemy to turn him out."
