For the crossing of the River Lys in October 1918. "For conspicuous gallantry as a company commander in the operations west of Courtrai between 14th and 21st October, 1918. He displayed marked courage and devotion to duty leading his men to the attack under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, and his organisation and initiative contributed in no small measure to the splendid success of the operations."
