"For great bravery displayed in rallying the men during an attack on the German line near Eaurcourt L'Abbaye on 1st October 1916. He led them forward to the objective under a very heavy fire, and having arrived there displayed great courage in organising and leading a bombing attack on the flank of his trench which had not been gained."
