Awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette 11 December 1916) as a Temporary Second Lieutenant, 13th (Service) Battalion DLI.

" For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led his men with great courage and initiative. Later he took out patrols and carried out most valuable work. He was wounded, but remained at his post until the captured position was consolidated."
