Joseph William Tugby
Biography | Medals | Citation | In Memoriam | GlossaryCitation
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. When his officer was wounded he took command of his section, directing their fire with great effect and covering the retirement of infantry until practically surrounded. He then skilfully withdrew his guns, remaining behind with one to cover their retirement. On reaching a new line, he again brought his guns into action, beating off several attacks and inflicting severe casualties on the enemy. He continued in action until all his team were casualties except himself and one man, and when his last gun was knocked out he fought his way back. His courage and endurance were splendid.
Bar to DCM (London Gazette 3.6.1918)
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This non-commissioned officer has rendered consistently good service during the last six months. On one occasion, when the section officer and many of the gun detachments had become casualties under the heavy barrage fire of the enemy, Sergeant Tugby reorganised the gun teams and brought them into action again."
