"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the officer commanding his platoon and the senior NCO's had become casualties he took command and led his men in an attack and reached the objective. He subsequently carried out the duties of CSM as well as commanding a platoon owing to heavy casualties among the NCO's. During eight days hard fighting he displayed qualities of leadership of a high order, and his personal gallantry under heavy fire and devotion to duty were a conspicuous example to his men."
