"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Pergatory in September 1918. When all the officers of his company became casualties he took command moving about amongst the men and organising them against a counter attack. Owing to heavy casualties and a withdrawal on his flank he was eventually obliged to withdraw a short distance. He set a fine example to the other NCO's and men."
