In the temporary absence of his officer, he maintained complete control and by his courage and coolness in passing along the line to visit the posts, always under a violent bombardment and in spite of blocks in the trench, he set a splendid example to the men. His promptness in opening fire was largely responsible for the repulse of one raiding party."
