1st Bar to Military Cross (London Gazette 18.6.1917 ), attached to 9 DLI.

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He behaved with great courage and coolness in attending the wounded under heavy shell fire. For two days he worked continuously, with an utter disregard for his own safety. By his efforts he was able to ensure the rapid evacuation of the wounded, and undoubtedly saved many lives."

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He attended a very large number of wounded in the open, under heavy fire from machine-guns and artillery, and it was largely owing to his skilful arrangements that the casualties were rapidly evacuated. Later on, while performing these duties, he was severely wounded by shell fire. Throughout the whole of the operations his courage and his example of self-sacrifice were worthy of high praise."
