"During operations near Pozieres on the 17th July 1916, he showed great gallantry and devotion to duty. On returning from the Aid Post after taking down a man who had been lying out four days, he was called to the Chalk Pit, where he assisted to bandage twenty casualties, and eventually succeeded in taking them back to the Aid Post under heavy shell fire. Whilst carrying out one patient a shell burst and killed the patient and the other stretcher bearer, a piece of shell passing through his own haversack. He immediately got another stretcher and with the help of another man, he eventually succeeded in getting all the cases to the Dressing Station. This man also showed great devotion to duty during operations near Contelmaison on the 17th July."
