Biography

Born in Bishop Auckland, he was serving in the 4th Battalion DLI as a Reservist in 1914. He was posted to 14 DLI on the Western Front and was awarded the Military Medal in 1917 for his bravery during a trench raid. In December 1917 at Cambrai, he gained the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his gallantry during 14 DLI's defence of the canal crossings east of Marcoing, when he rescued a wounded man from No Man's Land and later went back alone to man a Lewis Gun. It was in this action that Arthur Lascelles won his Victoria Cross.

John Nicholson died at Shildon in 1932.
