Biography

Born in 1898, he was a farmer at Gilling West near Richmond in North Yorkshire, when he enlisted in the 13th (Service) Battalion DLI in 1914. As a linesman, he was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre in September 1917 near Ypres for repairing telephone lines under heavy fire. He then won the Military Medal on 15 June 1918 at Asiago in northern Italy for again repairing lines "with complete disregard for personal safety" during an Austrian attack. Finally in October 1918, he gained the Bar to his Military Medal at Tilleuls Farm and Le Faux in France for yet again repairing telephone lines under heavy shell fire. He was discharged from the 13th Battalion DLI as a Sergeant. Thomas Armstrong served in the Home Guard during the Second World War.
