Born in Sudbury, Suffolk, he was a bricklayer before he enlisted in the 68th Light Infantry in 1849, aged 19 years. He fought in the Crimean War and was wounded at the Battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his bravery during the battle. After his recovery at the hospital at Scutari, he rejoined the 68 LI but took his discharge in 1860.
